Welcome A2 Photographers

Statement of Intent......
Build your portfolio....

Encounters:

The shields we put up in our brains: the filter between ourselves and those we meet.

The joining of two halfs.

Meetings between strangers…The million people we pass on a daily basis, but

never connect with.

Online encounters and the changing social landscape of the world.

Meeting for the last time.

The meeting of fiction and reality.

The meeting of land and sea.

Truly seeing yourself as you really are

The meeting of technology and nature

Amalgamations:

The butterfly effect (how a combination of actions / behaviours leads from one thing to another until every tiny moment in a life is interwoven with all the moments that came before)

Unpleasant combinations we would rather not be reminded of.

You and the one thing that defines you.

a group of people, groups, or countries who have joined together for a common purpose.

An Action or process which results in something new.

Combinations of numbers.

Society Today:

Digital technology and the impact it has on our lives.

Soaring depression levels / the psychiatric torment of modern man.

Drugs and mind-numbing forms of escape.

Slowing down.

More, more, more: ever increasing consumption.

Inside / Outside

Blurring of the boundary between inside and out.

Prison / loss of freedom.

The inconsistency between what is going on in the outside world and the inner turmoil of someone’s brain

The peeling back of interesting things to expose what is underneath

The Impossible Staircase: indoors blending into outdoors in an indeterminable fashion / a blurring of dimensions

Inside the human body: complex, organic form: the miracle of life (human anatomy drawings / x-rays

Deterioration.

Looking outside from an unusual perspective

Harmony and Discord:

Love and hate relationships

The human mind, swinging from joy to misery and despair / schizophrenia / the meddling mind: our own worst enemy.

The clashing of humans with the environment

An interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative

Disturbing of the peace.

Something beautiful and ugly.

Things in the wrong environment: placing objects unexpectedly in different locations to create discord

A visual battle: a mess of clashing colours

Shade:

An evanescent or unreal appearance

Obscurity owing to interception of the rays of light

Translucent

Overlapping shadows from multiple light sources

monochromatic subject, with the emphasis on tone (light & shade) rather than colour.

Icons:

Symbols

A sign  whose form suggests its meaning.

Religious

Sex symbols: the disparity between ‘real’ bodies and those portrayed in magazines…

Journey:

A physical journey from a particular destination to another

The transformational journey from old to new.

The journey from innocence to experience.

A journey through time.

Facades

Decaying wall surfaces / peeling away

Secrets hidden behind facades / the things nobody talks about

Digital

The merging of reality and our ‘online’ lives

The fictional online persona (the person we craft in our Facebook profiles and so on).

A way of behaving or appearing that gives other people a false idea of your true feelings or situation

Brain waves and digital imaging of human brains while dreaming

People – Ordinary and/or Extraordinary:

People engaged in ordinary mindless actions

Scars / tattoos / deformities that are out of the ordinary

The vices of ordinary people (cigarette smoking, alcoholism, food addiction etc)

Portraits of really ‘plain’ people – seeing the beauty in the ordinary

The facades / layers people build up around themselves to make themselves seem extraordinary – make-up, fashion accessories etc

The extraordinary......

Merging images of people with other objects to make fantastical creatures

Here and Now:

The impact of digital technology on modern lives

Learning Aim:

To developing your visual recording skills as an exploratory tool in communicating different ideas. Learning to observe and select visual information from the world around you forms a vital part of this unit.

You will work from direct observation, developing your skills and understanding to communicate and express creative ideas. Your coursework will extend your ability to select and visually record from a range of sources in order to communicate information to different audiences, using appropriate presentation methods and for a range of specific chosen purposes.

The investigation is to broaden and deepen your skills, knowledge and understanding of creative thinking, across contemporary and historical art and design, in order to inform your own practice.

You will investigate contextual sources to explore and analyse the creative ideas of different practitioners. Through this process you will analyse the ideas and concepts used by practitioners for different purposes.

Finally you will have produced a portfolio of work with great depth that reflects your creative, imaginative concepts through the ever change image of digital media.
