Learning Objectives:

 

To generate an interesting portrait using basic Photoshop tools to generate a thought provoking image.

​

Your work will combines beautiful aesthetics with dreamy camera effects or Photoshop a double exposures.  

 

1. A Place Within...

This lesson you will be creating an Erin Case inspired piece.

 

Use the image you took for your homework you are going to create a digital collage in the style of Erin Case.

 

Put your portrait on a layer over the top of the landscape.

 

  1. Use the magnetic selection tool to

     select different areas of the face.

​

  2. Once you have running ants hit      

     the delete key.

​

  3. Refine the edge with the refine      

     edge button.

Blommers-Schumm inspired.....

2. This lesson you will be create your own Blommers-Schumm inspired piece. Twist your head/view... what do you see?

 

In Photo Booth you are asked to take a series of portraits of yourself, using the black A1 sheet of paper as your backdrop.

 

 

  1.Use the magnetic selection tool or  

    Polyoganal tool select the features,  

    the eyes and mouth.

 

  2.Refine the edge with the refine    

    edge button.

​

  3.Rotate your portrait by leaving    

    the eyes and mouth in position.

​

  5.begin to edit your image by        

    blending the edges to form an      

    unusal portrait piece.

3. This lesson you will be exploring Multiple Exposure for your inspired piece.

 

TASK:

 

1.Select a portrait and or several portraits to overlay one another. You can also select a texture to place over the top of your photo.

 

2.Using the selection tool, select an area on your portrait and place over the top of your individual portrait. Adjust the layer blend to overlay and then adjust further the levels, exposure and contrast.. Repeat with additional portrait or texture.

​

3.Record results, process and       progress.

​

4.Find an artists in the multiple exposure pinterst board, research the artist and their work and  present along side your own work,  making connections and analytical  written response.

4. Lesson Objective: To generate an interesting portrait reflecting your hidden thoughts.

 

1.Select a portrait, cut and paste away part of the head, pivot and replace leaving a gap.

 

2.Using the selection tool, select the objects and place them into the gap to create an illusion of an exploding head, or hidden thought.

​

Make your piece very personal reflecting your interests, passion and likes.

​

3.Record results, process and progression,

present your work.

5. Lesson Objective: To generate an interesting portrait  fragmented portrait.

 

TASK:

 

Using photo booth take a good clear image of your self using the black paper as a back drop.

​

Drag or save onto the desk top, from which you required to take into I photo.  Edit and adjust the contrast, black and white mode , etc give the portrait dramatic response.

 

Again save by exporting picture, quality high and make sure you save to the desktop. Select again from desk top and place into photo shop.

​

Using the select tool, Square format, select elements as seen in the picture and fragment.  This could be by select and cut with a fill of black or select, cut and this time place in a different area, repeat over and over again to build up a fragmented effect.

6. Extension....You may wish to at this point to add colour to contrast with the black and white tones. Maybe in areas such as the head, mouth or eyes, Select a shape and repeat and experiment with layer blends...its your choice. Use the pipit tool, select a colour from your picture and fill. Over lay a landscape image... review and refine your outcome........save the image and present.

1. Create a new document by going to

File – new – International paper – A4.

 

Fill the background with colour.

 

Drag your image onto that document.

 

You might need to rub out around your portrait to make it blend with the background colour.

 

Use the marquee tool to select geometric shapes.

 

Use the arrow tool to move the shapes onto the background. 

 

Try larger shapes and move them to create geometric patterns

2. Drag your image into Photoshop

 

Use the selection tools on the

left tool bar.

 

Select areas then cmd c and cmd v to copy and paste (make sure you are on the background layer when you do this)

 

Experiment with the blends the get the effect you want.

 

Fill selected areas with colour and experiment with the blends again.

 

Build up the layers to create an interesting, creative composition.

3. Find a geometric shape with a white background

 

Drag into Photoshop. Use the magic wand to

select and delete the background.

 

Drag it onto your image.

 

Use the magic wand to select the shape.

 

Cmd c then cmd v to copy and paste the shape (make sure you are on the background layer when you do this)

 

Cmd T to change the size and rotate the shape.

 

Repeat this process until you are happy with the Results.

 

You can give your shapes a drop shadow by clicking on ‘fx’ at the bottom of your layers pallet.

 

You can change their hue etc by going to ‘image’then ‘Adjustments’ on the tool bar at the top of the page. This will make alterations just to that layer, not the whole image

Extend Those Ideas of Yours Again....

 

Look at the work of Alma Haser, select a geometric shape to work with. Take a favorite portrait into Photoshop and place the geometric shape............

DISTROY..

Ripping, scratching and cutting into photographs... (Destroy, Distort, Conceal)

Experiment further...Layer up images by sticking only the

edges. Use colour & black and white.

Tear and rip into the images to

produce a distorted image.

​

Consider what the narritive behind the image could be....

Explore negative and positive shapes....overlap.....

Experiment further...Layer up images by cutting into your photographs and use negative space as part of your

image.

Add Words..

Explore through the meaning of words........

Experiment further...take one of your images and add text. Explore different ways you can in-corportate words that reflect you, or maybe a quote as in the work of Barbara Kruger.....

Present your own example alongside Kruger's work....... Reflect and connect.

Combine...

Combine......Photomontage...

Using multiple images of yourself taken from different angles, scales and expressions piece them together to create a collage in the style David Hockney and Michelle Claesson Eismann. Experiment with images and there frame, or  add  different pictures of people and play with the shapes to create an interest mix and effect.

Developing a final piece........

Over the past few weeks you have explore the idea of portraiture and distortion.....

​

You are now asked to develop your work a little further by combining 4 or more of your favorite images, or those images that connect to a familiar narrative.

​

You may at this stage be unsure of the narrative you choose to represent, so get your thinking caps on.

 

Question your work... What have I produced...Is there a familiar link that runs between some images that could now be extended and developed into a final piece.  

Let your idea become a story through visual diaglogue...

You are asked to create a new document in photoshop.... 60cm X 160cm canvas.

​

Begin to place your chosen images ( 4 or more finished workshop experiments) onto the canvas, arrange them accordinaly to the desired composition, layout and design you are aesthetically wonting to create.

​

How would one image look overlayed upon another, experiment heavly with layer blends to create a really intreging personal responce to the project.

Record throughout your progress and present this alongside your final piece and evaluation to this unit.

Begin with your favorite image. 

Add anoth image and change the scale.

Flip your image and experiment with layer blends

Add or duplicate your image again and again. Changing scale

Arrange your images to create an interesting personal response. Remember to screen shot your progress and present alongside your evaluation and reflective summary.
